Cyber Safety is an important topic at Flemington PS. Staff and students are always alert for behaviours and issues which indicate that students maybe at risk online.
Students in Grade 5/6 are currently working with an external consultant to identify concerns and develop strategies for students and families. This does not mean that younger students are not at risk, just that this is a current concern in the Grade 5/6 area.
This consultant has identified the following areas of concern for our students:
Access to online gaming sites such as World of Warcraft and Avatars also requiring 16+ age
Have experienced online bullying through MSN and Facebook
Have participated in online bullying through MSN and Facebook
Have experienced pornography through unfiltered websites, through MSN and Facebook
Parents are encouraged to monitor their children's access to and use of the internet and to discuss online behaviours. The Australian Government website provides some advice and guidance for families. http://www.staysmartonline.gov.au/news-events/awareness_week
Following on from the Education Week technology wiki, this is an opportunity for parents to share their views with us and contribute to keeping our students safe in an increasingly online environment.
